INDUNA , a Zulu-See also:

Bantu word for an officer or See also:head of a See also:regiment among the Kaffir (Zulu-Xosa) tribes of See also:South See also:Africa. It is formed from the inflexional prefix in and duna, a See also:lord or See also:master. Indunas originally obtained and retained their rankand authority by See also:personal bravery and skill in See also:war, and often proved a menace to their nominal lord. Where, under See also:British See also:influence, the purely military See also:system of See also:government among the Kaffir tribes has broken down or been modified, indunas are now administrators rather than warriors. They sit in a consultative gathering known as an See also:indaba, and discuss the See also:civil and military affairs of their tribe.
