KOLIS , a See also:

caste or tribe of Western See also:India, of uncertain origin. Possibly the name is derived from the See also:Turki kuleh a slave; and, according to one theory, this name has been passed on to the See also:familiar word " cooly " for an agricultural labourer. They See also:form the See also:main See also:part of the inferior agricultural See also:population of See also:Gujarat, where they were formerly notorious as robbers; but they also extend into the See also:Konkan and the See also:Deccan. In 1901 the number of Kolis in all India was returned as nearly 31 millions; but this See also:total includes a distinct See also:weaving caste of Kolis or Koris in See also:northern India.
