capital of the Finnish See also:province of that name, situated on See also:Lake Kalla-vesi, 18o m. by See also:rail from the Kuivola junction of the St See also:Petersburg-See also:Helsingfors See also:main See also:line. Pop. (1904), 13,519. It is picturesquely situated, is the seat of a See also:bishop, and has a See also:cathedral, two lyceums and two gymnasia (both for boys and girls), a commercial and several professional See also:schools. There is an agricultural school at Levais, See also:close by. Kuopio, in consequence of its steamer communication with See also:middle See also:Finland and the See also:sea (via Saima See also:Canal), is a trading centre of considerable importance.
