LAKE See also:SCUTARI is almost bisected by the See also:line of the Montenegrin frontier. It occupies one of the depressions, known as polyes, which are See also:common throughout the Illyrian See also:Karst region. Its generally even margin is broken by the See also:estuary of the See also:river Moratcha, and by a See also:long, narrow inlet which stretches towards the See also:North Albanian See also:Alps. The lake See also:measures 135 sq. m.; its maximum See also:depth was long considered to be no more than 23 ft. But a See also:series of soundings taken in 1901 by Dr Jovan Cvijic revealed the existence of a series of deep holes near the See also:south-western See also:shore, one of which attains a depth of 144 ft. The See also:surface is 20 ft. above See also:sea-level. The See also:principal affluent of Lake Scutari is the Morateha, which enters it, after forming two small lakes, near the Montenegrin See also:port of Plavnitza. It is drained by the Boyana, which issues from its south-eastern extremity and flows to the Adriatic. Lake Scutari abounds in aquatic birds and See also:fish; its brilliantly clear See also:water, its See also:archipelago of wooded islets, and its setting of rugged mountains, some of which are covered with See also:snow during the greater See also:part of the See also:year, render it one of the most beautiful lakes in See also:Europe.
