S.E. of See also:Spezia by See also:rail, 246 ft. above See also:sea-Ievel. Pop. (1901), 10,559 (town); 26,118 (See also:commune). The Palazzo Ducale (now the prefecture) was erected in 1701, and was a summer See also:residence of See also:Napoleon's See also:sister, Elisa Baciocchi, princess of See also:Lucca, who caused the See also:ancient See also:cathedral opposite to be destroyed. The hills See also:round the town yield See also:marble, and there is a narrow-See also:gauge railway to the Marina d'Avenza, where the marble is shipped.
