city of See also:Colombia and See also:capital of the See also:department of Antioquia, 150 M. N.W. of See also:Bogota, on a See also:plateau of the Central See also:Cordillera, 4823 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1go6 estimate), 50,000. Medellin, the See also:foundation of which See also:dates from 1674, stands in the valley of the Porce, a tributary of the See also:Cauca, and is reputed to be one of the healthiest as well as one of the most attractive cities of the See also:republic. It has a university, See also:national See also:college, school of mines and other educational institutions, See also:assaying and refining laboratories, a public library and a See also:mint. The See also:principal See also:industry of the surrounding See also:country is See also:mining, and See also:gold and See also:silver are exported in considerable quantities. See also:Coffee and hides are also exported, but the See also:trade of the city has been greatly impeded by difficulties of transportation. A railway from Puerto Berrio, on the Magdalena, was begun many years before the end of the 19th See also:century, but See also:political 'and See also:financial difficulties interposed and See also:work was suspended when only 43 M. were finished. The completion of the remaining 8o m. was See also:part of a larger See also:scheme proposed in 1906 for bringing the Cauca Valley into railway communication with the national capital.
