CORDILLERA , a See also:

Spanish See also:term for a range or See also:chain of mountains, derived from the Old Spanish cordilla, the diminutive of cuerda, a See also:cord or rope. The name was first given to the See also:Andes ranges of See also:South See also:America, See also:Las Cordilleras de los Andes, and applied to the See also:extension of the See also:system into See also:Mexico. In See also:North America the parallel ranges of mountains See also:running between and including the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra See also:Nevada are known as the " Cordilleras," and that See also:part of the western See also:continent crossed by them has been termed the " Cordilleran region." Although the name has been applied to the eastern See also:mountain system of See also:Australia, the word is not, outside America, used as a generic term for parallel ranges of mountains.
