NAGAR , formerly BEDNUR, a See also:

When taken by Hyder See also:Ali in 1763, it is said to have yielded a See also:plunder of twelve millions. In 1783 it surrendered to a See also:British detachment under See also:General See also:Matthews, but being shortly after invested by Tippoo See also:Sultan, the See also:garrison capitulated on See also:condition of safe conduct to the See also:coast. Tippoo violated the stipulation, put General Matthews and the See also:principal See also:officers to See also:death, and imprisoned the See also:remainder of the force.
