NICKNAME , a name given to a See also:

person in addition to his See also:personal names, See also:Christian and surname, either as a playful or See also:familiar See also:form of address or as a See also:mark of ridicule, contempt or hatred. The See also:Middle See also:English form of the word, nekename, shows that it is a corruption of " an ekename " (i.e. " added " name; eke, earlier eche, from the See also:root seen in See also:Lat. augere, Gr. aWtvew), and is therefore See also:equivalent to the Lat. agnomen.
