town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Brahmaputra valley See also:division of eastern See also:Bengal and See also:Assam. The town is situated on the Kalang See also:river. Pop. (Igor) 4430. The district of Nowgong has an See also:area of 3843 sq. m. It consists of a wide See also:plain overgrown with See also:jungle and canebrakes, intersected by numerous tributaries of the Brahmaputra, and dotter' a,ith shallow marshes. The Mikir hills See also:cover an area of about 65 M by 35 in the S. of the district; the highest See also:peak is about 3500 ft. The slopes are very steep, and are covered with dense fort. The Kamakhya hills near the See also:bank of the Brahmaputra, are about 1500 ft. high. On the See also:summit of the highest peak is a celebrated See also:temple of Kamakhya, the See also:local goddess of love, where three See also:annual festivals are held. The See also:staple See also:crop is See also:rice. See also:Tea cultivation and manufacture are carried on by See also:European See also:capital and under European supervision, though the See also:soil and See also:climate are not so favourable`as in Upper Assam.
