NUKHA , a See also:

town of See also:Russian See also:Caucasia, in the See also:government of Elizavetpol, and previous to 1819 the See also:capital of the khanate of Sheki, lying 57 in. N.E. of the town of Elizavetopol, at the S. See also:foot of the See also:main See also:chain of the See also:Caucasus. Pop. (1861) 22,618; (1897) 24,811; mainly See also:Tatars, with some Armenians. The See also:cupola of the See also:church in the fortress is 2455 ft. above the See also:sea-level, in 410 12' 18" N. and 470 12' 7" E. The fortress, a square enclosure, erected in 1765, contains the See also:palace, built in 1790 in the See also:original See also:Persian See also:style. The leading See also:industry is the breeding of silkworms and the See also:spinning of See also:silk. Nukha was a See also:mere See also:village down to the See also:middle of the 18th See also:century, when it was chosen by Hajji Chelyabi, the founder of the khanate of Sheki, as his See also:residence. The Russian occupation See also:dates from 1807, though the See also:annexation was not completed till 1819.
