NUWARA ELIYA , a See also:

town and See also:sanatorium of See also:Ceylon. Pop. (1901) 5026, with r000 additional visitors during the See also:season. It is situated 6240 ft. above See also:sea-level, with the highest See also:mountain in the See also:island, Pedrotallagalla, towering over the See also:plain for 2056 ft. more. Nuwara Eliya is reached from See also:Colombo by railway, eight See also:hours to Namuoya, and thence, by a See also:light 21-ft.-See also:gauge See also:line,See also:running up to the See also:heart of the sanatorium. The See also:average shade temperature for the See also:year is 58° F.; the rainfall, 95 in. Considerable sums have been spent by the See also:government in improving the See also:place.
