OKUBO TOSHIMITSU (183o-1878) , See also:Japanese statesman, a samurai of Satsuma, was one of the. five See also:great nobles who led the revolution in 1868 against the shogunate. He became one of the See also:mikado's See also:principal ministers, and in the Satsuma troubles which followed he was the See also:chief opponent of See also:Saigo Takamori. But the suppression of the Satsuma See also:rebellion brought upon him the See also:personal revenge of Saigo's sympathizers, and in the See also:spring of 1878 he was assassinated by six clansmen. Okubo was one of the leading men of his See also:day, and in 1872 was one of the Japanese See also:mission which was sent See also:round the See also:world to get ideas for organizing the new regime.
