PALFREY , a See also:

riding-See also:horse, particularly' one of smaller and lighter type than the See also:war-horse, the " destrier " (Med. See also:Lat. dextrarius, because led by the right See also:hand till used), which was only ridden in See also:battle or See also:tournament. The palfrey was thus used on the See also:march, &c., and also as a See also:lady's riding-horse. " Palfrey " came into See also:English through the O. Fr. See also:pale/ ref, one of the numerous forms which the word took in its descent from the See also:Late Lat. paraveredus, a hybrid word from Gr. irapd, in the sense of extra, and veredus, a See also:post-horse, probably a See also:Celtic word, for one who draws a rheda or See also:carriage. The See also:form parafredus gives the Mod. Ger. Pferd, horse, through the O.H.G. pfarifrid.
