PALMER , a See also:

pilgrim who as a sign or token that he had made See also:pilgrimage to See also:Palestine carried a See also:palm-See also:branch attached to his See also:staff, or more frequently a See also:cross made of two strips of palm-See also:leaf fastened to his See also:hat. The word is frequently used as synonymous with " pilgrim " (see PILGRIMAGE). The name "palmer " or " palmer-See also:worm " is often given to many kinds of hairy cater-pillars, specifically to that of the destructive tineid See also:moth, Ypsilophus pometella. The name is either due to the See also:English use of " palm " for the blossom or catkin of the See also:willow-See also:tree, to which the caterpillars See also:bear some resemblance, or to the wandering pilgrim-like habits of such caterpillars.
