PALMELLA , a See also:

town of See also:Portugal, in the See also:district of See also:Lisbon (formerly included in the See also:province of See also:Estremadura); at the See also:north-eastern extremity of the Serra da Arrabida, and on the Lisbon-See also:Setubal railway. Pop. (1goo), inclusive of the neighbouring See also:village of Marateca, 11,478. Palmella is an See also:ancient and picturesque town, still surrounded by massive but ruined walls and dominated by a See also:medieval See also:castle. Viticulture, See also:market-gardening and See also:fruit-farming are important See also:local See also:industries. Palmella was taken from the See also:Moors in 1147 by See also:Alphonso I. (Affonso Henriques), and entrusted in 1186 to the knights of See also:Santiago. The See also:title " See also:duke of Palmella " See also:dates from 1834, when it was conferred on the statesman Pedro de See also:Sousa-See also:Holstein, See also:count of Palmella (1781-185o).
