PEDRO II . (1825–1891), See also:emperor of See also:Brazil, came to the See also:throne in childhood, having been See also:born on the 2nd of See also:December 1825, and proclaimed emperor in See also:April 1831, upon the See also:abdication of his See also:father. He was declared of full See also:age in 184o. For a See also:long See also:period few thrones appeared more secure, and his prosperous and beneficent See also:rule might have endured throughout his See also:life but for his want of See also:energy and inattention to the signs of the times. The rising See also:generation had become honeycombed with republicanism, the prospects of the imperial See also:succession were justly regarded as unsatisfactory, the higher classes had been estranged by the emancipation of the slaves, and all these causes of discontent found expression in a military revolt, which in See also:November 1889 overthrew the seemingly solid edifice of the Brazilian See also:Empire in a few See also:hours. Dom Pedro retired to See also:Europe, and died in See also:Paris on the 5th of December 1891. The See also:chief events of his reign had been the emancipation of the slaves, and the See also:war with See also:Paraguay in 1864–70. Dom Pedro was a See also:model cogstitutional See also:sovereign, and a munificent See also:patron of See also:science and letters. He travelled in the See also:United States (1876), and thrice visited Europe (1871–1872, 1876–1877, 1886-1889).
