PENOBSCOT , a tribe of See also:North See also:American See also:Indians of Algonquian stock. Their old range was the See also:country around the See also:river Penobscot in See also:Maine. They sided with the See also:French in the colonial See also:wars, but made a treaty of See also:peace with the See also:English in 1749. They fought against the English in the See also:War of See also:Independence, and were subsequently settled on an See also:island in the Penobscot river, near Oldtown.
