adjective adapted from the See also:Roman See also:law See also:term peremptorium See also:edict um, peremptoria exceptio, a See also:decree or plea which put an end to or quashed (See also:Lat. perimere, to destroy) an See also:action, hence decisive, final. A similar use is found in See also:English law in " peremptory See also:challenge," a challenge to a See also:jury allowed to a prisoner-without cause shown, or " peremptory See also:mandamus," an See also:absolute command. The natural repugnance to a final See also:order has given this word in its See also:ordinary usage a sense of objectionable and intolerant emphasis.
