PETTICOAT , an underskirt, as See also:part of a woman's See also:dress. Thi petticoat, i.e. " See also:petty-coat " or small coat, was originally a shor garment for the upper part of the See also:body worn under an See also:outer dress; in the Promptorium parvulorum the Latin See also:equivalent is tunicula. It was both a See also:man's and a woman's garment, and See also:war in the first See also:case worn as a small coat under the doublet and by See also:women apparently as a See also:kind of chemise. It was however, See also:early applied to the skirt worn by women hangin€ from the See also:waist, whether as the See also:principal See also:lower garment or a: an underskirt.
