PHARI , a See also:town of See also:Tibet. It is supposed to be the highest and coldest town in the See also:world, being 15,000 ft. above the See also:sea. As it commands the road between the Chumbi Valley and See also:Lhasa and also one of the See also:chief passes into See also:Bhutan, Phari is of considerable military importance, and is defended by a large fort or Jong, which was occupied by the See also:British expedition of 1904. Phari Jong is supposed to have been built about 1500 A.D., and was enlarged or rebuilt in 1792, under See also:Chinese See also:advice, as a See also:defence against the British. It has the See also:appearance of a See also:medieval See also:castle, and seems to have been built in See also:imitation of the See also:European See also:style.
