PICROTOXIN , a neutral principle obtained from the Cocculus indicus, which is the See also:

fruit of the Anamirta paniculata. It is used in See also:medicine externally as an antiparasitic. Internally it has been successfully used to check the See also:night-sweats of See also:phthisis. In large doses it is a powerful See also:poison, causing unconsciousness, See also:delirium, See also:convulsions, gastro-See also:enteritis and stimulation of the See also:respiratory centre followed by See also:paralysis, from which See also:death sometimes results. Formerly See also:low class publicans sometimes added Cocculus indicus berries to See also:beer to increase the intoxicating effects. Its chemical See also:formula is C16H16O6 • See also:H2O.
