church of the 11th-15th centuries, Pitiglia.no was originally a See also:fief of the countship of Sovana, which in 1293 came by See also:marriage into the See also:possession of the See also:Orsini. In 1410 Sovana was taken by the Siennese, but by the terms of a See also:peace concluded in 1417 the Orsini retained Pitigliano, See also:Gentile Orsini (assassinated 1434) assuming the See also:title of See also:count of Pitigliano. The most famous of the See also:line of See also:counts was Niccolo III. (1442-1510), a celebrated See also:condottiere. Under his successors Pitigliano became the See also:scene of ceaseless See also:family feuds culminating in assassinations. In 1562 the See also:Medici of See also:Florence seized See also:part of their territories, and acquired the See also:rest by See also:exchange in 1580. The Orsini stronghold still stands in the town.
