PODOLSK , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Moscow, 26 m. S. of the See also:city of Moscow, at the junction of the two See also:main roads from Moscow to the See also:Crimea and to See also:Warsaw. Pop. (1881), 11,000; (1897), 3808. It is picturesquely built on the hilly See also:banks of the Pakhra, here crossed by a suspension See also:bridge for carriages as well as by the railway bridge. Down to 1781 the wealthy See also:village of Podol was a dependency of the Danilov monastery in Moscow. Before the opening of the See also:southern railway the caravans of wagons and sledges to and from Moscow used to See also:halt here; the See also:principal occupation of the inhabitants was innkeeping and supplying the caravans with provisions and other necessaries of travel. The See also:limestone quarries, at the confluence of the Desna and the Pakhra, See also:supply the See also:capital with See also:good See also:building material; and there are a See also:cement, See also:lime and See also:brick factory and a See also:paper-See also:mill.
