POPERINGHE , an See also:

ancient See also:town of See also:West See also:Flanders, 12 M. W. of See also:Ypres. Pop. (1904), 11,680. It contains a See also:fine See also:church of the 11th See also:century, dedicated to St Betin. In the 14th century it promised to become one of the See also:principal communes in Flanders; but having incurred the resentment of Ypres on a See also:matter of See also:trade rivalry it was attacked and captured by the citizens of that See also:place, who reduced- it to a very subordinate position. There are extensive See also:hop gardens, See also:bleaching grounds and tanneries in the neighbourhood of the town.
