PRISCUS , a See also:

Greek Neoplatonist philosopher, of the school of See also:Iamblichus and See also:Aedesius. He died about the See also:year 398 at the See also:age of ninety. The See also:emperor See also:Julian frequently invited him to See also:court on the strength of his reputation in connexion with theurgy. See also:Eunapius says that he was a See also:man of dignified and austere See also:habit. Unlike See also:Maximus, he used his See also:influence over Julian with See also:great moderation. He died during the See also:Gothic invasion of See also:Greece (A.D. 396–98). He is important partly as maintaining the best traditions of See also:philosophy during a See also:period when See also:Neoplatonism as a whole was a See also:parasite of imperial See also:power, and partly as being a connecting See also:link between Iamblichus and See also:Plutarch of See also:Athens. See See also:Zeller's Hist. of Greek Phil.
