RANDAN , a name for a See also:boat rowed by three persons, stroke and See also:bow using a single See also:oar each and the central See also:person a pair of sculls. The word is of unknown origin, and can hardly be connected with a See also:slang See also:term for a See also:row or See also:spree, which is found as See also:early as the beginning of the 18th See also:century and is generally taken as a variation of " See also:random," haphazard. RANDAllO, a See also:town of See also:Sicily, in the See also:province of See also:Catania, at the N. See also:foot of See also:Mount See also:Etna, 43 M. N. by W. of Catania by See also:rail, and 26 m. See also:direct. Pop. (1901) 11,798. It has considerable remains of See also:architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries, including three See also:Norman churches and some interesting palaces. The former contain some See also:fine sculptures and See also:goldsmith's See also:work (Mauceri in L'Arte, 1906, 185). It is the nearest town to the See also:summit of Etna (9 m.), and is one of the points from which the ascent may be made.
