RUG , a See also:term of Scandinavian origin (cf. Swed. rugg, rough See also:hair; Norw. See also:dial. rugga, rough), and probably connected with " rough " and " rag," originally for a See also:kind of coarse woollen material, like See also:frieze; hence it is used of a piece of thick material used as a wrap or covering for the knees or See also:body in travelling or in See also:bed, and especially for a thick See also:mat or small-sized See also:carpet laid on the See also:floor (see CARPET).
