SAHEL (Arabic for `,` See also:

By sahel any See also:coast See also:belt may be indicated, but the name has become the definite designation of certain districts, e.g. the Tunisian coast between the gulfs of Hammamet and See also:Gabes. Another region so called is that See also:part of the See also:Sahara washed by the See also:Atlantic. The name is also used to designate the territory under See also:French See also:jurisdiction See also:west of See also:Timbuktu and See also:north of the See also:Senegal. Sahel thus understood comprises regions which See also:form the inter-mediate See also:zone between the fertile lands of the See also:Sudan and the See also:desert. In its plural form, See also:Swahili, the word has become the tribal name of the natives inhabiting the coast See also:strip opposite See also:Zanzibar.
