SAHIB , a See also:

title of respect in See also:India, specially used to designate Europeans. The word is Arabic, and originally means a See also:companion. It is generically fixed to the titles of men of See also:rank, as See also:Khan Sahib, See also:Nawab Sahib, See also:Raja Sahib, and is See also:equivalent to See also:master. The proper feminine See also:form is sahiba; but the hybrid See also:term memsahib (from madam and sahib) is universally used in India for See also:European ladies.
