SLAVYANSK , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Kharkov, 158 m. by See also:rail S.E. of the town of Kharkov, on the Torets See also:river and See also:close by several See also:salt lakes, from which salt is extracted. Pop. (1897) 15,644. There are See also:soap, See also:candle and See also:tallow-See also:works. Slavyansk carries on a brisk See also:trade in salt, See also:cattle and tallow. The See also:ancient name of Slavyansk was Tor. The town, which is supposed to occupy the site of a former See also:settlement of the Torks (See also:Turks), who inhabited the See also:steppes of the See also:Don, was founded in 1676 by the Russians to protect the salt marshes. Having an open See also:steppe behind it, this fort was often destroyed by the See also:Tatars. Its salt trade became insignificant in the 18th See also:century and only revived towards the end of the 19th century.
