SOLINGEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:Province, on a height above the See also:Wupper, 13 m. S.E. of See also:Dusseldorf, and 20 M. N.E. of See also:Cologne by See also:rail. Pop. (r905), 4.9,018. Solingen is one of the See also:chief seats of the See also:German See also:iron and See also:steel See also:industry,, its speciality consisting in all kinds of See also:cutlery, Solingen See also:sword-See also:blades have been celebrated for centuries, and are widely used outside Germany, while bayonets, knives, See also:scissors, surgical See also:instruments, files, steel frames and the like are also produced in enormous quantities. These articles are largely made by the workmen at their own homes and supplied to the depots of the large dealers; there are about 20,000 workers in steel in Solingen and the vicinity. Solingen received its municipal See also:charter in 1374. Sword-blades have been made here since the See also:early See also:middle ages, and tradition affirms that the See also:art was introduced during the See also:Crusades by smiths from See also:Damascus.
