STENTOR , a genus of heterotrichous ciliate See also:

Infusoria (q.v.), so named by R. See also:Oken. It possesses a large moniliform See also:meganucleus, accompanied by numerous micronuclei, and has a See also:trumpet shape, when at See also:rest, anchored by pseudopodial outgrowths from the narrow end. It is relatively large, and is much utilized to demonstrate See also:myonemes, and had been also the See also:object of interesting studies on regeneration, any piece, containing with a fragment of the meganucleus at least one See also:micronucleus, regenerating the whole See also:animal (see REGENERATION). S. polymorphus often inhabits a gelatinous sheath and may be See also:green with zoochlorella; it attains a length of ?b in. S. caeruleus and igneus are coloured See also:blue and See also:scarlet respectively by pigment granules in the ectosarc: E. R. Lankester made a study of the pigment of the former (blue stentorin).
