STETHOSCOPE (Gr. vrijOos, See also:chest, and UK07r6.v, to look, examine) , a medical See also:instrument used in See also:auscultation (q.v.). The single stethoscope is a straight wooden or See also:metal See also:tube with a flattened See also:bell, the See also:surface of which is usually covered with See also:ivory or See also:bone at the end which is placed against the See also:body of the patient, and a small See also:cup at the other to See also:fit- the See also:ear of the observer. In the " binaural " stethoscope, which has the See also:advantage of flexibility, the tube is divided above the bell into two flexible tubes which See also:lead to both ears.
