series of steps of See also:stone or See also:wood, or a See also:combination of bars and steps used for passing over a fence or See also:wall without the See also:necessity of a permanent open passage or of opening or shutting a See also:gate. The Old See also:English, stigel is formed from stigan, to climb, ascend; See also:stair (O. Eng. staeger) and See also:stirrup are from the same See also:root. Stile (See also:Lat See also:stiles, a pointed See also:instrument) is really the correct spelling of See also:style (q.v.).
