TRACHELIUM (Gr. TpaXnXos, See also:neck) , the See also:term in See also:architecture given to the neck of the See also:capital of the Doric and Ionic orders. In the See also:Greek Doric capital it is the space between the annulets of the See also:echinus and the grooves which marked the junction of the See also:shaft and capital; in some See also:early examples, as in the See also:basilica and See also:temple of See also:Ceres at See also:Paestum and the temple at See also:Metapontum, it forms a sunk See also:concave moulding, which by the See also:French. is called the See also:gorge. In the See also:Roman Doric and the Iodic orders the term is given by See also:modern writers to the See also:interval between the lowest moulding of the capital and the See also:top of the See also:astragal and See also:fillet, which were termed the " See also:hypotrachelium " (q.v.).
