TRACHOMA , the name given to a chronic destructive See also:

form of inflammation of the conjunctiva of the See also:eye (see EYE: Diseases), or " granular conjunctivitis " (See also:Egyptian ophthalmia). It is a contagious disease, associated with dirty conditions, and See also:common in See also:Egypt, See also:Arabia and parts of See also:Europe, especially among the See also:lower class of See also:Jews. Hence it has become important, in connexion with the See also:alien See also:immigration into the See also:United See also:Kingdom and See also:America, and the rejection of those who are afflicted with it. It is important that all cases should be isolated, and that the spread of the infection should be prevented.
