He fought in the See also:defence of See also:Florence during the See also:siege by the Mediceans and imperialists in 1530, and was exiled after the surrender of the See also:city. In 1536 he took See also:part in See also:Piero See also:Strozzi's unsuccessful expedition against Medicean See also:rule, but seven years later he was called back to Florence by Cosimo I., who gave him a See also:pension and commissioned him to write a See also:history of the city; the See also:work covers the See also:period from 1527 to 1538. Varchi also wrote a number of plays, poems, dialogues and See also:translations from the See also:classics. His history, in sixteen books, was first published in Florence in 1721.
