VYAZMA , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Smolensk, 109 m. by See also:rail E.N.E. of the town of Smolensk. Pop. 15,676. It was a populous See also:place as See also:early as the 11th See also:century, and carried on a lively See also:trade with See also:Narva on the Gulf of See also:Finland. In the 15th century it See also:fell under the dominion of Lithuania, but was retaken by the Russians. The Poles took it again in 1611, and kept it till the See also:peace of 1634. It is now an important centre for trade. It has a See also:cathedral, dating from 1596.
