YOKOSUKA , a seaport and See also:naval station of See also:Japan, on the W. See also:shore of See also:Tokyo See also:Bay, 12 M. S. of See also:Yokohama. The See also:town is connected by a See also:branch See also:line with the See also:main railway from Tokyo. The See also:port is sheltered by hills and affords See also:good anchorage. The site was occupied by a small fishing See also:village until 1865, when the See also:shogun's See also:government established a shipyard here. In 1868 the See also:Japanese government converted the shipyard into a naval dockyard, and subsequently carried out many improvements. In 1884 the port became a first-class naval station; and naval See also:barracks, warehouses, offices, hospitals, &c., were established here. The dockyard was first constructed by See also:French See also:engineers ; but after 1875 the See also:work passed entirely into the hands of Japanese engineers.
