Spanish name used in See also:California for various See also:species of the See also:shell-See also:fish of the Haliotidae See also:family, with a richly coloured shell yielding See also:mother-of-See also:pearl. This sort of Haliotis is also commonly called " See also:ear-shell," and in See also:Guernsey " ormer (Fr. ormier, for oreille de mer). The abalone shell is found especially at See also:Santa See also:Barbara and other places on the See also:southern Californian See also:coast, and when polished makes a beautiful See also:ornament. The mollusc itself is often eaten, and dried for See also:consumption in See also:China and See also:Japan.
