ABUTILON (from the Arabic aubutilslae, a name given by See also:Avicenna to this or an allied genus) , in See also:botany, a genus of See also:plants, natural See also:order See also:Malvaceae (Mallows), containing about eighty See also:species, and widely distributed in the tropics. They are See also:free-growing shrubs with showy See also:bell-shaped See also:flowers, and are favourite greenhouse plants. They may be grown outside in See also:England during the summer months, but a few degrees of See also:frost is fatal to them. They are readily propagated from cuttings taken in the See also:spring or at the end of the summer. A large number of horticultural varieties have been See also:developed by hybridization, some of which have a variegated foliage.
