AIMAK , or Deckle (Mongolian for " See also:clan," or See also:section of a tribe), the name given to certain nomadic or semi-nomadic tribes of Mongolian stock inhabiting the See also:north and north-See also:west Afghan See also:highlands immediately to the north of See also:Herat. They were originally known as "chahar (the four) Eimaks," because there were four See also:principal tribes: the Taimani (the predominating See also:element in the See also:population of Ghur), the Ferozkhoi, the Jamshidi and, according to some authorities, the See also:Hazara. The Aimak peoples number upwards of a See also:quarter of a million, and speak a See also:dialect said to be closely related to the See also:Kalmuck. They are Sunnite Mahommedans in distinction from the Hazara who are See also:Shiites. They are predominantly of Iranian or quasi-Iranian See also:blood, while the Hazara are Turanian.
