AKHTYRKA , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Kharkov, near the Vorskla See also:river, connected by a See also:branch (Ii m.) with the railway from See also:Kiev to Kharkov. It has a beautiful See also:cathedral, built after a See also:plan by Rastrelli in 1753, to which pilgrims resort to venerate an ikon of the Virgin. There are manufactures of See also:light woollen stuffs • and a See also:trade in See also:corn, See also:cattle and the produce of domestic See also:industries. The environs are fertile, the orchards producing excellent See also:fruit. A See also:fair is held on the 9th of May. The See also:place was founded by the Poles in 1642. Pop. (1867) 17,411; (1900) 25,965.
