ALBENGA , a See also:

town and episcopal see of See also:Liguria, See also:Italy, on the N.W. See also:coast of the Gulf of See also:Genoa, in the See also:province of Genoa, 522 m. S.W. of Genoa by See also:rail. Pop. (1901) 6248. Albenga is the See also:ancient See also:Album Ingaunum or Albingaunum, the See also:chief town of the Ingauni, one of the most important of the Ligurian tribes, whose territory reached as far as Genoa. Under the See also:empire it was a municpium; an inscription records the restoration of the walls, See also:forum, See also:harbour, &c., by See also:Constantius A.D. 354. A little way out-See also:side the town to the E. is a well-preserved See also:Roman See also:bridge nearly 500 ft. See also:long and 112 ft. wide, with ro See also:arches, each,with a span of 37 ft. It belonged to the coast road and is now known as See also:Ponte See also:Lunge. To the S. of the town is a conspicuous See also:monument, 27 ft. high, in the See also:form of a rectangular See also:pillar, resembling a See also:tomb; but as there is no trace of a See also:door to a sepulchral chamber it may be. a See also:shrine. In the town itself there are no Roman remains; but there is a See also:good See also:Gothic See also:cathedral in See also:brick, and an interesting octagonal See also:baptistery, attributed to the 8th or 9th See also:century, the arches being supported by ancient columns, and the vaulting decorated with mosaics. Some of the See also:medieval palaces of Albenga have lofty brick towers.
