ALCAMO , a See also:

town of See also:Sicily, in the See also:province of See also:Trapani, 24 M. W.S.W. of See also:Palermo See also:direct (51i M. by See also:rail). Pop. (1881) 37,497; (1901) 51,809. It was founded in A.D. 828 by the Saracenic See also:chief Al-Kamuk, who erected the See also:castle (which still stands, though considerably altered), but was christianized by the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. in 1233, who removed the site See also:lower down. It possesses some See also:medieval buildings of See also:interest. The surrounding See also:district is very fertile and the See also:trade in agricultural prcMucts is considerable.
