ALPHONSO II ., "the See also:Fat," was See also:born in 1185, and succeeded his See also:father, Sancho I., in 1211. He was engaged in See also:war with the See also:Moors and gained a victory over them at Alcacer do Sal in 1217. He also endeavoured to weaken the See also:power of the See also:clergy and to apply a portion of their enormous revenues to purposes of See also:national utility. Having been excommunicated for this by the See also:pope (See also:Honorius III.), he promised to make amends to the See also:church; but he died in 1223 before doing anything to fulfil his engagement. He framed a See also:code which introduced several beneficial changes into the See also:laws of his See also:kingdom.
