ANAMALAI HILLS , a range of mountains in See also:

southern See also:India, in the See also:Coimbatore See also:district of See also:Madras, lying between 10° 13' and 10 31' N. See also:lat., and between 76° 52' and 77° 23' E. See also:long., forming a portion of the Western See also:Ghats, after this range has been broken by the See also:Palghat Pass, See also:south of the See also:Nilgiris. They really consist of a See also:forest-clad and grassy tableland, with summits rising about 8000 ft.; the Anaimudi See also:mountain, which is the highest in southern India, having an See also:altitude of 885o It. Their See also:geological formation is metamorphic See also:gneiss, veined with See also:felspar and See also:quartz, and interspersed with reddish porphyrite. The See also:lower slopes yield valuable See also:teak and other See also:timber; and some See also:land has been taken up for See also:coffee planting. The only inhabitants are a few See also:wild tribes who live by See also:hunting and See also:collecting See also:jungle produce.
