ARAUCANIA , the name of a large territory of See also:

Chile, See also:South See also:America, S. of the Bio-bio See also:river, belonging to the Araucanian See also:Indians (see below) at the See also:time of their See also:independence of See also:Spanish and Chilean authority. The loss of their See also:political independence has been followed by that of the greater See also:part of their territory, which has been divided up into the Chilean provinces of See also:Arauco,, Bio-bio, See also:Malleco and See also:Cautin, and the Indians, much reduced in number, now live in the wooded recesses of the three provinces last named.
