AUGUSTOWO , a See also:

city of See also:Russian See also:Poland, in the See also:government of See also:Suwalki, 20 M. S. of the See also:town of that name, on a See also:canal (65 m.) connecting the See also:Vistula with the Niemen. It was founded in 1557 by See also:Sigismund II. (See also:Augustus), and is laid out in a very See also:regular manner, with a spacious See also:market-See also:place. It carries on a large See also:trade in See also:cattle and horses, and manufactures See also:linen and See also:huckaback. Pop. (1897) 12,746.
